All that I wanted to do was get set up to respond to comments and posts I read on John C. Wright's live journal (which I recommend that you look at). However, it seems a waste to let this space go to unused.
My latest achievement was a small tracked vehicle cobbled together from LEGO. It was powered with the IR-remote system from the Creature Creator Set. The tricky bit was the power train, as the two motors in the set were of different sizes and ran at different speeds, so the standard skip-steering setup of one motor driving one track would have it run in circles, or require much experimentation to get the gear ratios balanced. Instead, I used a pair of differentials and geared the small motor to drive the tracks in opposite directions, while the large motor as geared to drive both tracks in the same direction. The two differentials allow both motors to be meshed with the tracks at the same time, and both can be running. The vehicle can move forward or reverse, rotate, or drive in a circle.
The vehicle is not much to look at, as once the power train was lashed together the rest of the vehicle was assembled around it, with no thought to aesthetics. A future update will have pictures and I may try to figure out how to post video on YouTube.
